香葉基二磷酸（GPP）是異戊二烯生物合成的中間體。異痙攣化合物是一組多樣化的天然產(chǎn)物，是所有細胞中必不可少的成分。異戊二烯由簡單的前體異戊烯基二磷酸酯（IPP）和二甲基烯丙基二磷酸酯（DMAPP）生物合成而成。真核生物、真菌和一些革蘭氏陽性細菌通過甲羥戊酸 （MVA） 途徑產(chǎn)生 IPP，而革蘭氏陰性和一些革蘭氏陽性細菌利用非甲羥戊酸或 2-C-甲基-D-赤蘚糖醇-4-磷酸 （MEP） 途徑。GPP是由DMAPP和IPP在香葉基二磷酸合酶催化下縮合形成的。
