Anti-Hexokinase antibody recognizes hexokinase which phosphorylates hexoses. Hexokinase uses one ATP molecule when phosphorylating six-carbon sugars. In mammals there are four isozymes of hexokinase, the most notable of which is hexokinase IV, also known as glucokinase which is highly specific for glucose. Phosphorylation of hexoses commit them to certain metabolic pathways. For example, phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate limits it to glycolysis or glycogen synthesis.
