Interleukin 10 （IL-10），originally known as cytokine synthesis inhibitory factor （CSIF），is a pleiotropic cytokine with a myriad of immunomodulatory effects on a variety of cell types. On activated B cells，IL-10 can induce the formation of plasma cells and the secretion of IgG or，in the presence of TGF-beta1 and/or IL-4，the secretion of IgA. On macrophages，IL-10 is known to downregulate IL-1，TNF-alpha and IL-6 production. On dendritic cells，IL-10 has been shown to interfere with antigen-presenting cell （APC） functions by downmodulating the expression of stimulatory and co-stimulatory molecules. IL-10 has also been found to inhibit dendritic cell differentiation from monocytes and to promote monocyte maturation into cytotoxic CD16+ macrophages. Rat IL-10 cDNA encodes a 178 aa residue precursor protein that contains an 18aa signal sequence and a 160aa mature protein.
