Desmoplakin pS2849 is high molecular weight protein of desmosomes. It is a member of the plakin or cytolinker family and is involved in the organization of the desmosomal cadherin-plakoglobin complexes into plasma membrane domains in the anchoring of intermediate filaments to the desmosomes. The phosphorylation theoretically affects its association with epidermal, simple cytokeratins and VIM intermediate filaments. Defects in DSP are the cause of keratosis palmoplantaris striata II, Carvajal syndrome, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy 8.
