The protein encoded by CTSZ is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase and member of the peptidase C1 family. It exhibits both carboxy-monopeptidase and carboxy-dipeptidase activities.Cathepsin Z has also been known as cathepsin X and cathepsin P.
