Mambalgins define a new structural and functional class among snake three-finger toxins. These type of toxins are found in snake venoms (specifically in black mambas) and are characterized by their distinctive structure. Mambalgins are the only three-finger toxins to target ASIC channels and show no neurotoxic effect. These three-finger toxins show an analgesic effect against acute and inflammatory pain upon central and peripheral injection that can be as strong as morphine. Mambalgins cause much less tolerance than morphine and no respiratory distress.
