- Junctional complexes between the plasma membrane andnendoplasmic/sarcoplasmic reticulum are a common feature of allnexcitable cell types and mediate cross talk between cell surfacenand intracellular ion channels. The protein encoded by this gene isna component of junctional complexes and is composed of a C-terminalnhydrophobic segment spanning the endoplasmic/sarcoplasmic reticulumnmembrane and a remaining cytoplasmic domain that shows specificnaffinity for the plasma membrane. This gene is a member of thenjunctophilin gene family. Alternative splicing has been observed atnthis locus and two variants encoding distinct isoforms arendescribed.
