- Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded bynnuclear genes and help in protein synthesis within thenmitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of ansmall 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimatedn75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes,nwhere this ratio is reversed. Another difference between mammaliannmitoribosomes and prokaryotic ribosomes is that the latter containna 5S rRNA. Among different species, the proteins comprising thenmitoribosome differ greatly in sequence, and sometimes innbiochemical properties, which prevents easy recognition by sequencenhomology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. Alternativelynspliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have beenndescribed.
