- Histones are basic nuclear proteins that are responsiblenfor the nucleosome structure of the chromosomal fiber inneukaryotes. Two molecules of each of the four core histones (H2A,nH2B, H3, and H4) form an octamer, around which approximately 146 bpnof DNA is wrapped in repeating units, called nucleosomes. Thenlinker histone, H1, interacts with linker DNA between nucleosomesnand functions in the compaction of chromatin into higher ordernstructures. This gene is intronless and encodes a member of thenhistone H2A family. Transcripts from this gene lack polyA tails butninstead contain a palindromic termination element. This gene isnfound in a histone cluster on chromosome 1. This gene is one ofnfour histone genes in the cluster that are duplicated; this recordnrepresents the telomeric copy.
