- Laminins, a family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins,nare the major noncollagenous constituent of basement membranes.nThey have been implicated in a wide variety of biological processesnincluding cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling,nneurite outgrowth and metastasis. Laminins are composed of 3 nonnidentical chains: laminin alpha, beta and gamma (formerly A, B1,nand B2, respectively) and they form a cruciform structurenconsisting of 3 short arms, each formed by a different chain, and anlong arm composed of all 3 chains. Each laminin chain is anmultidomain protein encoded by a distinct gene. Several isoformsnof each chain have been described. Different alpha, beta and gammanchain isomers combine to give rise to different heterotrimericnlaminin isoforms which are designated by Arabic numerals in thenorder of their discovery, i.e. alpha1beta1gamma1 heterotrimer isnlaminin 1. The biological functions of the different chains andntrimer molecules are largely unknown, but some of the chains havenbeen shown to differ with respect to their tissue distribution,npresumably reflecting diverse functions in vivo. This gene encodesnthe beta chain isoform laminin, beta 1. The beta 1 chain has 7nstructurally distinct domains which it shares with other beta chainnisomers. The C-terminal helical region containing domains I and IInare separated by domain alpha, domains III and V contain severalnEGF-like repeats, and domains IV and VI have a globularnconformation. Laminin, beta 1 is expressed in most tissues thatnproduce basement membranes, and is one of the 3 chains constitutingnlaminin 1, the first laminin isolated from Engelbreth-Holm-Swarmn(EHS) tumor. A sequence in the beta 1 chain that is involved inncell attachment, chemotaxis, and binding to the laminin receptornwas identified and shown to have the capacity to inhibitnmetastasis.

- Store at 4˚C for three months and -20˚C, stable for up to one year. As with all antibodies care should be taken to avoid repeated freeze thaw cycles. Antibodies should not be exposed to prolonged high temperatures.
