- CpG methylation is an epigenetic modification that isnimportant for embryonic development, imprinting, and X-chromosomeninactivation. Studies in mice have demonstrated that DNAnmethylation is required for mammalian development. This genenencodes a DNA methyltransferase that is thought to function in dennovo methylation, rather than maintenance methylation. The proteinnlocalizes to the cytoplasm and nucleus and its expression isndevelopmentally regulated. Alternative splicing results in multiplentranscript variants encoding different isoforms.
