- This gene encodes a member of the sorting nexin family.nMembers of this family contain a phox (PX) domain, which is anphosphoinositide binding domain, and are involved in intracellularntrafficking. Overexpression of this gene results in a decrease innthe processing of insulin and hepatocyte growth factor receptors tontheir mature subunits. This decrease is caused by thenmislocalization of furin, the endoprotease responsible for cleavagenof insulin and hepatocyte growth factor receptors. This protein isninvolved in endosomal trafficking from the plasma membrane tonrecycling endosomes or the trans-Golgi network. This gene encodesntwo transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
