- This gene encodes the mineralocorticoid receptor, whichnmediates aldosterone actions on salt and water balance withinnrestricted target cells. The protein functions as anligand-dependent transcription factor that binds tonmineralocorticoid response elements in order to transactivatentarget genes. Mutations in this gene cause autosomal dominantnpseudohypoaldosteronism type I, a disorder characterized by urinarynsalt wasting. Defects in this gene are also associated with earlynonset hypertension with severe exacerbation in pregnancy.nAlternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
