特色產品乙二胺四乙酸(EDTA)可能是工業和醫療用途中最受歡迎的金屬離子螯合劑。它被廣泛用于螯合過渡金屬離子,例如鎳、鈷、鐵、亞鐵、汞、鉛和其他金屬離子,如鈣和鎂。在被EDTA結合成金屬絡合物后,金屬離子通常表現出降低的反應性。EDTA不能滲透活細胞。EDTA,AM酯是EDTA的細胞滲透性衍生物。通過與細胞膜滲透性EDTA-AM酯孵育,活細胞被動負載EDTA、AM。一旦內化,細胞質酯酶就會裂解AM酯,釋放出活性四羧酸鹽配體EDTA,不加選擇地螯合細胞內金屬離子。例如,它可用于隔離細胞質Ca2+,以研究細胞質鈣離子的作用,或者可用于隔離重金屬污染物或抑制需要二價陽離子活性的金屬酶和金屬蛋白酶。
