- This high purity methyl ester of docosapentaenoic acid (DPAn-3) is ideal as a gas chromatography standard. This very longchain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid (along with other omega-3 fatty acids) is thought to influence memory and cognition, protect neurons, and reduce inflammation. DPAn-3 is an intermediate in the in-vivo synthesis of DHA, a polyunsaturated fatty acid that has been demonstrated as critical for many biological functions. In animals it is usually found acylated to phospholipids. Omega-3 fatty acids such as DPAn-3 and DHA have been shown to reduce the risk of acute coronary events in humans.1 Seal oil has been suggested as more efficient than fish oil at promoting healthy plasma lipid profiles and lowering thrombotic risk, possibly due to its high DPAn-3 and EPA content.2
