Ferrostatin-1 inhibits a specific type of non-apoptotic, iron-dependent, oxidative cell death termed ferroptosis (IC50 = 60 nM), which is induced by the oncogenic Ras-selective compound, erastin (Item No. 17754).{28856} Ferrostatin-1 prevents ferroptosis in cancer cells as well as glutamate-induced cell death in organotypic rat brain slices.{28856} Ferrostatin-1 also inhibits cell death in models of Huntington’s disease, periventricular leukomalacia, and kidney dysfunction where it has been found to prevent the accumulation of cytosolic and lipid reactive oxygen species.{28857}
